Names

There are multiple approaches to teaching ballet according to traditional methods or schools. All are equally valid, although sometimes it can get confusing when there are different names for the same movement. However there are seven movements of ballet.

   Plier        to bend

 Relever   to rise

     Étendre   to stretch

  Glisser     to glide

 Tourner   to turn

   Sauter     to jump

 Élancer    to dart

At the end of last class we learnt "jeté élancé en tournant" whose name is an excellent description of the movement. "Jeté" means to throw, a jump taking off from one foot and landing on the other. "Élancer" is to dart and "en tournant" is an action that is performed whilst turning. But forget the words and remember the feel of the movement when dancing......darting forwards.

List is from Ballet Pedagogy, Rory Foster.

Happy New Year!

National Ballet of Canada

Hi! Welcome back :) I took a rather long break due to the show and the Christmas holidays, but now we're back! Five months into the school year we are longer, stronger and more beautiful - imagine what we can accomplish in the next six months.....The show was amazing but now we are moving on. New challenges, new possibilities alongside of repitition and strengthening. Now is the time to evaluate and plan. I'm hoping that you want to contribute - come with questions, suggestions, critique and wishes. You can write them in the comment section here (in Norwegian), in our Facebook group, SMS, or ask in class (it's a good idea to write things down so you don't forget anything though). There is nothing that is too small or stupid to talk about, you can comment anonymously, or speak to me privately at any time. I hope that some of you take the challenge.

I look forward to seeing you all in class :)
